Cats Around Town Society(C.A.T.S.) is a local 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that closely follows the efforts of Alley Cat Allies, a nationally known group based in Bethesda, MD. Although C.A.T.S. is a relatively new group for the resort area, most of the group's volunteers were actively involved with another local group for numerous years. We intend to continue efforts to reduce the feral feline over-population
C.A.T.S. is comprised of people who believe the best way to "control" the feline feral overpopulation is to do what is known as the Trap/Neuter/Return(TNR). Various studies have proven that TNR is the ONLY truly effective and humane way to diminish the feral feline population, especially as it is estimated that 40+ million feral cats reside in our country.
CATS participates in an
out-of-state PetSmart Adoption Program. Felines accepted into this
program are spayed/neutered (s/n) and vaccinated prior to being
adopted. We also embrace the practice of “pediatric” s/n procedures;
these procedures are accomplished before kittens reach 6 months of
age. Pediatric s/n procedures cause felines’ reproductive processes to
“shut down” ... thereby 100% effectively preventing over-population
before it begins.
We also participate in a program offered by the State of DE’s
Department of Agriculture. This particular program offers tremendous
financial assistance to people who desire to s/n their feline
companions but who have little (or no) reliable income. To qualify
for this program, individuals must provide identification; they must
receive financial assistance from the state of DE. Once qualified,
individuals pay a fee of only $20 for s/n (this fee includes rabies vaccination as well). Qualifying groups (like CATS) are provided
totally “free” s/n funding for 30 felines per year. Groups must be
incorporated in the state of DE and must have 501(c)(3) status in DE.
